Medication Summary

Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.

Overview

Cyclobenzaprine hydrochloride tablets are a prescription medicine used as an adjunct to rest and physical therapy for relief of muscle spasm linked to acute, painful musculoskeletal conditions. The label says improvement may include less muscle spasm, pain, tenderness, limited motion, and trouble with daily activities.

This medicine is for short-term use only, generally up to 2 or 3 weeks, because there is not enough evidence for longer use and these conditions are usually short in duration. The label says it is not effective for spasticity from brain or spinal cord disease or for children with cerebral palsy.

Cyclobenzaprine can cause drowsiness, dry mouth, dizziness, and other side effects. It may also interact with other medicines, including MAO inhibitors and several serotonergic drugs, and it may enhance the effects of alcohol and other CNS depressants.

The label notes extra caution for older adults and people with hepatic impairment, because drug levels can be higher in those groups.

Key Counseling Points

  • Take only as prescribed; this medicine is for short-term use, usually up to 2 or 3 weeks.
  • For most patients, the recommended dose is 5 mg three times a day; your prescriber may adjust it based on response.
  • Older adults and people with hepatic impairment may need a lower starting dose and slower dose increases.
  • This medicine may cause drowsiness, so be careful with activities that need alertness, such as driving or operating machinery.
  • Avoid alcohol and be cautious with other CNS depressants, because cyclobenzaprine may increase their effects.
  • Do not use cyclobenzaprine with MAO inhibitors or within 14 days after stopping an MAO inhibitor.
  • Tell your healthcare provider about other serotonergic medicines, such as SSRIs, SNRIs, TCAs, tramadol, bupropion, meperidine, or verapamil.
  • Seek medical care right away if symptoms of serotonin syndrome occur, such as confusion, agitation, hallucinations, sweating, fast heartbeat, fever, tremor, clonus, or diarrhea.
  • Use caution if you have a history of urinary retention, angle-closure glaucoma, increased eye pressure, or if you take anticholinergic medicines.
  • Store the tablets in a well-closed, child-resistant container at 20u00b0 to 25u00b0C (68u00b0 to 77u00b0F).
