Cyproheptadine hydrochloride tablets, USP are prescription-only tablets for oral use that contain 4 mg of cyproheptadine hydrochloride in each tablet. Cyproheptadine is described on the label as an antihistaminic and antiserotonergic agent with anticholinergic and sedative effects.
The tablets are indicated for several allergy-related conditions, including perennial and seasonal allergic rhinitis, vasomotor rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis due to inhalant allergens and foods, mild allergic skin manifestations such as urticaria and angioedema, cold urticaria, dermatographism, and allergic reactions to blood or plasma. The label also lists use as adjunctive therapy for anaphylactic reactions after the acute manifestations have been controlled.
Important safety information includes warnings about sedation, decreased mental alertness, and additive effects with alcohol and other central nervous system depressants. The label also lists multiple contraindications, including use in newborn or premature infants, nursing mothers, and patients with certain eye, urinary, gastrointestinal, or prostate conditions.
