This product has a DailyMed drug label PDF from the National Library of Medicine.
Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.
Doxycycline Capsules USP are an oral antibacterial medicine in the tetracycline class. The label states that doxycycline should be used only for infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria, to help reduce the development of drug-resistant bacteria.
This medicine is indicated for a wide range of bacterial infections, including certain respiratory tract, urinary tract, sexually transmitted, tick-borne, and other infections. It is also used for acne in some cases, and for inhalational anthrax after exposure, according to the label.
The label warns that doxycycline can cause side effects such as stomach upset, diarrhea, sun sensitivity, and irritation or ulceration of the esophagus. It also warns about tooth discoloration and effects on bone and tooth development in children, as well as risks during pregnancy.
People taking doxycycline should follow the prescribed directions carefully and complete the full course when instructed. The label also notes that doxycycline may interact with some medicines and that fluids should be taken with the capsule to reduce the risk of esophageal irritation.
Store at 25°C (77°F); excursions permitted to 15 to 30°C (59 to 86°F) [see USP controlled room temperature]. Dispense in a tight, light-resistant container as defined in the USP/NF.
Doxycycline Capsules USP is an oral tetracycline-class antibacterial medicine available in 50 mg, 75 mg, and 100 mg strengths. DailyMed labeling describes uses for selected bacterial infections, including certain respiratory, urinary, sexually transmitted, tick-borne, and anthrax post-exposure situations, as well as some acne-related treatment uses.
Educational product information for doxycycline capsules should also note key label warnings, including possible photosensitivity, gastrointestinal side effects, esophageal irritation, drug interactions, and important precautions for children and pregnancy. This helps support accurate pharmacy counseling based on the official label.
