Medication Summary

Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.

Overview

Ezetimibe tablets are a prescription medicine used to help lower elevated LDL cholesterol, also called "bad" cholesterol. The label says they may be used alone or together with other cholesterol-lowering medicines, depending on the condition being treated, and they are used as an adjunct to diet.

The tablets are also used in certain children and adults with inherited cholesterol conditions, including heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, and homozygous familial sitosterolemia. For some uses, ezetimibe is taken with a statin or fenofibrate.

The recommended dose is 10 mg by mouth once daily, with or without food. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible, but do not double the next dose. LDL-C may be checked as early as 4 weeks after starting treatment.

  • Do not take two doses at the same time to make up for a missed dose.
  • If you take a bile acid sequestrant, ezetimibe should be taken at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after it.
  • Tell your prescriber about all other medicines you take, including statins, fenofibrate, cyclosporine, and fibrates.
  • Report muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, especially if it is severe.
  • Report symptoms that could suggest liver problems, since liver enzyme increases have been reported.
  • Hypersensitivity reactions have been reported, including anaphylaxis, angioedema, rash, and urticaria.
  • This medicine is used together with diet to help lower LDL-C in certain patients.
  • Do not use ezetimibe during pregnancy or nursing unless the potential benefit justifies the potential risk, according to the label.

Helpful Patient Education

Ezetimibe tablets are an oral cholesterol-lowering medicine that selectively inhibits the intestinal absorption of cholesterol and related phytosterols. The label describes use as an adjunct to diet for lowering elevated LDL-C in certain adults and pediatric patients, and it may be used alone or in combination with other lipid-lowering therapies depending on the indication.

Product labeling also notes important safety information, including possible liver enzyme increases, muscle-related adverse reactions, and hypersensitivity reactions. For patients using ezetimibe with other lipid-lowering medicines, the label advises reviewing the prescribing information for those products for additional safety and interaction details.
