Medication Summary

Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.

Overview

Famotidine tablets are a histamine-2 (H2) receptor antagonist taken by mouth. They are indicated for adults and pediatric patients 40 kg and greater for active duodenal ulcer, active gastric ulcer, symptomatic nonerosive GERD, and erosive esophagitis due to GERD diagnosed by biopsy.

In adults, famotidine tablets are also indicated for pathological hypersecretory conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and multiple endocrine neoplasias, and for reducing the risk of duodenal ulcer recurrence.

The tablets may be taken once daily before bedtime or twice daily in the morning and before bedtime, with or without food. The label also notes that famotidine tablets may be given with antacids.

Common adverse reactions include headache, dizziness, constipation, and diarrhea. The label warns about possible serious hypersensitivity reactions, CNS adverse reactions in elderly patients and patients with renal impairment, and drug interactions with medicines that depend on gastric pH for absorption and with tizanidine.

Storage Information

STORAGE AND HANDLING Famotidine tablets USP, 20 mg are yellow, film-coated, round shaped tablets with ‘C’ 119 on one side and plain on other side and are supplied in bottles of 30’s, 100’s and 1,000’s counts. Storage Store at 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F) [see USP Controlled Room Temperature]. Dispense in a USP tight, light-resistant container.

Key Counseling Points

  • Take famotidine tablets once daily before bedtime or twice daily in the morning and before bedtime, as recommended.
  • Famotidine tablets may be taken with or without food.
  • Famotidine tablets may be given with antacids.
  • Use is described for adults and pediatric patients 40 kg and greater for the labeled conditions.

  • Tell a healthcare professional about all medicines you take, especially drugs dependent on gastric pH for absorption and tizanidine.
  • The most common adverse reactions reported are headache, dizziness, constipation, and diarrhea.
  • Elderly patients and patients with renal impairment have an increased risk of CNS adverse reactions; the label recommends dosage reduction in renal impairment.
  • The label notes that symptomatic response does not rule out gastric malignancy in adults with poor response or early symptom relapse.
  • In pediatric patients weighing less than 40 kg, the 20 mg and 40 mg tablets are not recommended.

Helpful Patient Education
