Medication Summary

Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.

Overview

Famotidine tablets are a histamine-2 (H2) receptor antagonist taken by mouth. They are used in adult and pediatric patients 40 kg and greater for active duodenal ulcer, active gastric ulcer, symptomatic nonerosive GERD, and erosive esophagitis due to GERD diagnosed by biopsy.

In adults, famotidine tablets are also used for pathological hypersecretory conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and multiple endocrine neoplasias, and to reduce the risk of duodenal ulcer recurrence.

The tablets may be taken with or without food. The label says to take them once daily before bedtime or twice daily in the morning and before bedtime, as directed in the prescribing information.

Common adverse reactions include headache, dizziness, constipation, and diarrhea. Serious hypersensitivity reactions can occur, and the label warns that some patients, especially older adults and those with renal impairment, may be at higher risk for central nervous system adverse reactions.

Storage Information

STORAGE AND HANDLING Famotidine Tablets USP, 20 mg are light yellow to yellow, round film-coated tablets debossed with ‘‘11‘’ on one side and ‘’plain’’ on the other side. Storage Store at 20° to 25°C (68° to 77°F) [see USP Controlled Room Temperature]. Dispense in a USP tight, light-resistant container.

Key Counseling Points

  • Famotidine tablets are taken by mouth.
  • They may be taken with or without food.
  • The label says they are taken once daily before bedtime or twice daily in the morning and before bedtime, as recommended.
  • They may be given with antacids.
  • Use is not recommended in pediatric patients weighing less than 40 kg for the 20 mg and 40 mg tablet strengths.
  • Tell a healthcare professional about any history of serious allergic reaction to famotidine or other H2 receptor antagonists.
  • Older adults and people with renal impairment may have a higher risk of central nervous system side effects.
  • Common side effects listed in the label include headache, dizziness, constipation, and diarrhea.
  • Famotidine can affect absorption of some other medicines; the label lists several drugs for which concomitant use is not recommended.
  • If symptoms improve only partly or return soon after treatment, the label notes that evaluation for gastric malignancy should be considered in adults.

Helpful Patient Education

Famotidine tablets are an oral histamine-2 (H2) receptor antagonist used for acid-related conditions, including duodenal ulcer, gastric ulcer, symptomatic nonerosive GERD, and erosive esophagitis due to GERD in patients who meet the label criteria. In adults, the product is also indicated for certain pathological hypersecretory conditions and for reducing the risk of duodenal ulcer recurrence.

This label-based information also highlights key safety points, including possible drug interactions, the need for dose adjustment in renal impairment, and common adverse reactions such as headache, dizziness, constipation, and diarrhea. Patients and caregivers should use the prescribing information for full dosing and administration details.
