Medication Summary

Overview

Gabapentin capsules are for oral use. According to the label, they are used in adults for postherpetic neuralgia and as add-on treatment for partial onset seizures with and without secondary generalization in adults and children 3 years and older with epilepsy.

The label says gabapentin can be taken with or without food. Capsules should be swallowed whole with water. If gabapentin is stopped, reduced, or changed to another medicine, it should be done gradually over at least 1 week unless the prescriber recommends a longer taper.

Important safety warnings on the label include serious allergic reactions, breathing problems, sleepiness, dizziness, suicidal thoughts or behavior, and the need to avoid abrupt discontinuation because seizure frequency may increase. The label also notes dose adjustment may be needed in people with reduced kidney function.
