Medication Summary

Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.

Overview

Glipizide tablets are an oral prescription medicine in the sulfonylurea class. They are used along with diet and exercise to help improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

The tablets contain 5 mg or 10 mg of glipizide. The label says glipizide lowers blood glucose by stimulating insulin release from the pancreas and depends on functioning beta cells.

Glipizide should not be used in people with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. The label also warns about the risk of hypoglycemia, especially in certain situations such as missed meals, exercise, alcohol use, or use with other glucose-lowering medicines.

Storage Information

Store below 30°C (86°F). Dispense in a tight container as defined in the USP.

Key Counseling Points

  • Take glipizide about 30 minutes before a meal, as directed on the label.
  • Use it as an addition to diet and exercise, not as a substitute for them.
  • Know the signs and treatment of low blood sugar, since glipizide can cause hypoglycemia.
  • Low blood sugar may be more likely if you do not eat enough, exercise heavily, drink alcohol, or take other glucose-lowering drugs.
  • Tell your healthcare provider about all medicines you take, including NSAIDs, azole antifungals, beta blockers, diuretics, corticosteroids, and oral miconazole.
  • Blood and urine glucose should be monitored periodically; glycosylated hemoglobin may also be useful.
  • Glipizide may need special caution in people with kidney or liver problems, and in older, debilitated, or malnourished patients.
  • If you become ill, have fever, trauma, infection, or surgery, blood sugar control may change and treatment may need to be reassessed.
  • Report symptoms such as rash, jaundice, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, or stomach upset to your healthcare provider.
  • Keep the medicine out of the reach of children.
