Medication Summary

Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.

Overview

Glyburide tablets USP are an oral blood-glucose-lowering medicine in the sulfonylurea class. They are used together with diet and exercise to help improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

The tablets come in 1.25 mg, 2.5 mg, and 5 mg strengths. The 2.5 mg tablets contain FD&C Yellow No. 6, and the 5 mg tablets contain D&C Yellow No. 10 aluminum lake and FD&C Blue No. 1 aluminum lake.

The label warns that glyburide can cause severe hypoglycemia. It also notes that some patients may become less responsive over time, and that blood sugar should be monitored with urine and/or blood glucose testing as directed by the prescriber.

Storage Information

Store at 20° to 25°C (68° to 77°F) [See USP Controlled Room Temperature]. Dispense in tight, light-resistant container as defined in the USP, with a child-resistant closure (as required).

Key Counseling Points

  • Take glyburide as directed; the usual starting dose is 2.5 to 5 mg daily with breakfast or the first main meal.
  • Some patients who are more sensitive to hypoglycemic drugs may start at 1.25 mg daily.
  • Follow the prescribed diet and exercise plan; the label says glyburide is used as an adjunct to diet and exercise.
  • Watch for symptoms of hypoglycemia, since sulfonylureas including glyburide can cause severe low blood sugar.
  • Tell the prescriber about any other medicines, because several drugs may increase hypoglycemia risk or affect blood sugar control.
  • If blood sugar control worsens during stress such as fever, trauma, infection, or surgery, the label says insulin may be needed.
  • Regular urine glucose tests and periodic blood glucose tests are recommended to monitor response.
  • Do not use glyburide for diabetic ketoacidosis, type 1 diabetes, or with bosentan; these are listed as contraindications.
  • Report any rare but serious problems such as jaundice, hepatitis, or severe skin reactions, because the label says the drug should be discontinued if these occur.
