Key Counseling Points

• Take hydrochlorothiazide exactly as prescribed; therapy should be individualized and the smallest effective dose used.
• This medicine may increase urination; the label notes diuresis begins within about 2 hours, peaks in about 4 hours, and lasts 6 to 12 hours.
• Report signs of fluid or electrolyte imbalance such as dry mouth, thirst, weakness, confusion, muscle cramps, dizziness, or nausea/vomiting.
• Tell your healthcare provider if you have kidney disease, liver disease, or a history of allergies, since the label says caution is needed in these situations.
• Seek prompt medical attention for sudden decreased vision or eye pain, which may be a sign of acute myopia or angle-closure glaucoma.
• Protect your skin from the sun and follow recommendations for regular skin cancer screening.
• The label says lithium generally should not be given with diuretics; check before using new medicines.
• Alcohol, barbiturates, narcotics, some blood pressure medicines, NSAIDs, corticosteroids, ACTH, and diabetes medicines may interact with hydrochlorothiazide.
