Overview

Lovastatin tablets USP are a cholesterol-lowering medicine for use with a diet restricted in saturated fat and cholesterol. The label says they are used as part of a multiple risk factor approach in people with dyslipidemia who are at risk for atherosclerotic vascular disease.

According to the label, lovastatin is indicated to help reduce elevated total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol in primary hypercholesterolemia when diet and other non-drug measures have not been enough. It is also indicated to reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, unstable angina, and coronary revascularization procedures in certain people without symptomatic cardiovascular disease.

The tablets are also indicated to slow the progression of coronary atherosclerosis in patients with coronary heart disease. In adolescent boys and post-menarchal girls with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, lovastatin is indicated as an adjunct to diet to reduce total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and apolipoprotein B when the label criteria are met.
