Medication Summary

Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.

Overview

Lovastatin tablets are a prescription medicine used along with diet changes to lower total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol. The label says it is used as part of a multiple risk factor treatment plan for people with dyslipidemia who are at risk for atherosclerotic vascular disease.

According to the label, lovastatin is also used in certain adults to reduce the risk of heart attack, unstable angina, and coronary revascularization procedures. It is indicated to slow the progression of coronary atherosclerosis in patients with coronary heart disease.

Lovastatin tablets are also indicated for some adolescents with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, as an adjunct to diet, to reduce total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and apolipoprotein B. The label notes that therapy should be combined with a diet restricted in saturated fat and cholesterol when diet and other non-drug measures have not been enough.

Storage Information

Store at 20° to 25°C (68° to 77°F) [See USP Controlled Room Temperature]. Dispense in a tight, light-resistant container as defined in the USP, with a child-resistant closure (as required).

Key Counseling Points

  • Take lovastatin only as prescribed.
  • Use it with a diet restricted in saturated fat and cholesterol, as directed on the label.
  • Lovastatin is intended as part of a broader treatment plan for cholesterol and cardiovascular risk.
  • The label states that single daily doses given in the evening were more effective than the same dose taken in the morning in clinical studies.
  • Tell your healthcare provider about all medicines you take, because the label warns that some drugs can raise lovastatin levels and increase the risk of myopathy.
  • Avoid grapefruit juice unless your prescriber says otherwise; the label says grapefruit juice can increase lovastatin concentrations.
  • Tell your healthcare provider if you have kidney problems, because higher levels were seen in severe renal insufficiency in the label.
  • If you are an adolescent patient, the label limits studied doses to 40 mg daily and says long-term effects in childhood have not been established.
  • The label says lovastatin should not be used when triglycerides are high and LDL cholesterol is low or normal, because it is not indicated in that situation.
  • Keep follow-up appointments for lipid testing so treatment response can be assessed.
  • Do not use lovastatin as a substitute for diet and other nonpharmacological measures.

Helpful Patient Education

Lovastatin tablets, USP are a prescription cholesterol-lowering medicine supplied by Teva Pharmaceuticals USA, Inc. The DailyMed label describes lovastatin as an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor used with diet and other non-drug measures to reduce elevated total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol in appropriate patients.

This medication is also labeled for certain adults with coronary heart disease and for primary prevention of some coronary events in selected patients without symptomatic cardiovascular disease. The label also includes use in specific adolescents with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia as an adjunct to diet.
