Overview

Memantine hydrochloride tablets are an NMDA receptor antagonist indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe dementia of the Alzheimer's type.

The tablets are taken by mouth and may be taken with or without food. The usual starting dose is 5 mg once daily, with dose increases made in 5 mg steps at intervals of at least 1 week, up to a maintenance dose of 10 mg twice daily.

If a dose is missed, the next dose should be taken as scheduled and the dose should not be doubled. If the medicine has not been taken for several days, dosing may need to be restarted at lower doses and increased again.

Common side effects reported in clinical trials include dizziness, headache, confusion, and constipation.
