This product has a DailyMed drug label PDF from the National Library of Medicine.
Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.
Metoprolol tartrate tablets are a beta 1-selective blocker available as oral tablets in several strengths, including 50 mg. The label states they are used to treat high blood pressure, manage angina over the long term, and reduce cardiovascular mortality in hemodynamically stable patients with definite or suspected acute myocardial infarction when used alone or with intravenous metoprolol.
The label says metoprolol works by blocking beta 1 receptors in the heart, which can lower heart rate, cardiac output, and blood pressure. It should be used carefully because it can also affect beta 2 receptors at higher levels. The tablets contain inactive ingredients including lactose monohydrate, colloidal silicon dioxide, hypromellose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, polyethylene glycol, titanium dioxide, sodium starch glycolate, talc, and D&C Red #30 Aluminum Lake.
Important label warnings include not stopping the medicine suddenly, because abrupt discontinuation may worsen angina or cause serious heart problems. The label also warns about slowed heart rate, heart failure, bronchospastic disease, diabetes and hypoglycemia masking, and interactions with several other medicines.
Store at 20° to 25°C (68° to 77°F). Dispense in a tight, light-resistant container as defined in the USP using a child-resistant closure.
Metoprolol tartrate tablets are an immediate-release beta 1-selective blocker used for hypertension, long-term angina treatment, and to help reduce cardiovascular mortality in selected patients with suspected or definite acute myocardial infarction. This DailyMed label also describes key safety information, including contraindications, warnings about abrupt discontinuation, and possible drug interactions.
This educational page is based on the official label and is intended to help patients and caregivers understand common uses, safety considerations, and general counseling points for metoprolol tartrate tablets.
