Medication Summary

Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.

Overview

Metoprolol tartrate tablets are a beta 1-selective blocker available as oral tablets in several strengths, including 50 mg. The label states they are used to treat high blood pressure, manage angina over the long term, and reduce cardiovascular mortality in hemodynamically stable patients with definite or suspected acute myocardial infarction when used alone or with intravenous metoprolol.

The label says metoprolol works by blocking beta 1 receptors in the heart, which can lower heart rate, cardiac output, and blood pressure. It should be used carefully because it can also affect beta 2 receptors at higher levels. The tablets contain inactive ingredients including lactose monohydrate, colloidal silicon dioxide, hypromellose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, polyethylene glycol, titanium dioxide, sodium starch glycolate, talc, and D&C Red #30 Aluminum Lake.

Important label warnings include not stopping the medicine suddenly, because abrupt discontinuation may worsen angina or cause serious heart problems. The label also warns about slowed heart rate, heart failure, bronchospastic disease, diabetes and hypoglycemia masking, and interactions with several other medicines.

Storage Information

Store at 20° to 25°C (68° to 77°F). Dispense in a tight, light-resistant container as defined in the USP using a child-resistant closure.

Key Counseling Points

  • Take metoprolol regularly and continuously as directed.
  • Take it with or immediately following meals.
  • If a dose is missed, take only the next scheduled dose; do not double up.
  • Do not stop metoprolol without consulting the physician.
  • Do not abruptly discontinue the medicine, especially if you have coronary artery disease.
  • The label advises avoiding driving, operating machinery, or other alertness-requiring tasks until you know how the medicine affects you.
  • Contact the physician if any difficulty in breathing occurs.
  • Tell the physician or dentist before any type of surgery that you are taking metoprolol.
  • Watch for signs of slow heart rate, dizziness, or fainting and report concerns promptly.
  • In patients with diabetes, metoprolol may mask tachycardia that can occur with hypoglycemia.
