Increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior in pediatric and young

adult patients taking antidepressants. Closely monitor all antidepressant-treated patients for clinical worsening and emergence of suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Paroxetine tablets are not approved for use in pediatric patients. (5.1, 8.4)

Adverse Reactions

Most common adverse reactions (≥5% and at least twice placebo) are abnormal ejaculation, asthenia, constipation, decreased appetite, diarrhea, dizziness, dry mouth, female genital disorder, impotence, infection, insomnia, libido decreased, male genital disorder, nausea, nervousness, somnolence, sweating, tremor, yawn. (6)

Storage Information

Store tablets at 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). store Paroxetine Tablets? •Store paroxetine tablets at 20° to 25°C (68° to 77°F). Store at 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F) [See USP Controlled Room Temperature]. Dispense in a tight, light-resistant container as defined in the USP, with a child-resistant closure.

Key Counseling Points

  • Take paroxetine tablets once daily in the morning, with or without food.
  • Do not stop taking paroxetine tablets suddenly; the label says the dose should be reduced gradually when discontinuing.
  • Tell your healthcare provider about all medicines you take, especially MAOIs, thioridazine, pimozide, and other serotonergic drugs.
  • Get medical help right away for symptoms of serotonin syndrome such as agitation, hallucinations, fever, sweating, fast heartbeat, tremor, stiffness, or diarrhea.
  • Watch for new or worsening suicidal thoughts or behavior, especially when starting treatment or when the dose changes.
  • The label warns that paroxetine tablets may increase the risk of bleeding, especially with aspirin, NSAIDs, antiplatelet drugs, warfarin, or other anticoagulants.
  • Tell your healthcare provider if you have a history of bipolar disorder, mania, hypomania, or seizures.
  • Report symptoms of low sodium such as headache, confusion, weakness, memory problems, or unsteadiness.
  • Paroxetine tablets may cause sexual dysfunction; the label says to discuss any changes in sexual function during treatment.
