Medication Summary

Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.

Overview

Pravastatin sodium tablets are a statin medicine taken by mouth once daily. The label says they are used, along with diet, to lower LDL cholesterol and to help reduce the risk of certain heart and blood vessel problems in adults. They are also used in children 8 years and older with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia.

The tablets may be taken at any time of day, with or without food. The label gives different starting doses depending on age, kidney function, and certain drug interactions.

Important safety warnings include muscle problems such as myopathy and rhabdomyolysis, liver problems, and rare immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy. Patients should report unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, especially if it comes with feeling unwell or fever.

The label also says pravastatin sodium may cause fetal harm, and breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment.

Storage Information

Store at 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F); excursions permitted to 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F) [See USP Controlled Room Temperature].

Key Counseling Points

  • Take once daily at any time of day, with or without food.
  • Use it as an adjunct to diet; diet and lifestyle measures remain important.
  • Report unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, especially with malaise or fever.
  • Tell your healthcare professional about all medicines you take, especially gemfibrozil, cyclosporine, clarithromycin, erythromycin, niacin, fibrates, colchicine, and bile acid sequestrants.
  • If you take a bile acid sequestrant, pravastatin should be taken at least 1 hour before or 4 hours after it.
  • Your clinician may check LDL-C after starting treatment and may adjust the dose if needed.
  • The label warns about liver injury; liver enzyme testing may be done before treatment and as clinically indicated.
  • Do not use during pregnancy unless a clinician decides the ongoing need outweighs the risk; breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment.
  • Pediatric use is described for patients 8 years and older with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia.
  • The label lists common adverse reactions such as musculoskeletal pain, nausea/vomiting, upper respiratory infection, diarrhea, and headache.

Helpful Patient Education

Pravastatin sodium tablets are an oral statin used as part of diet therapy to lower LDL cholesterol and to reduce certain cardiovascular risks in adults. The label also includes use in pediatric patients 8 years and older with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. Tablets are taken once daily and may be taken with or without food.

Educational label information also highlights important safety considerations, including muscle-related reactions, liver effects, and drug interactions that may increase the risk of myopathy and rhabdomyolysis. Patients should be aware of the need to report unexplained muscle symptoms and to review all concomitant medicines with a healthcare professional.
