Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.
Prednisone Tablets, USP are a glucocorticoid medicine available by prescription in 1 mg, 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg, and 20 mg strengths. The label describes prednisone as a synthetic corticosteroid that is readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and used for its anti-inflammatory and immune-modifying effects.
The label lists many possible uses, including certain endocrine, rheumatic, allergic, skin, eye, respiratory, blood, gastrointestinal, and other conditions. It is not used for everyone, and the label says the lowest possible dose should be used for the shortest appropriate time.
Prednisone tablets are contraindicated in systemic fungal infections and in people with known hypersensitivity to the tablet components. The label also warns that corticosteroids can suppress the immune system, increase the risk of infection, and cause problems if stopped too suddenly.
The tablet contains inactive ingredients that vary by strength, including lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, and starch-related ingredients; the 20 mg tablet also contains FD&C Yellow No. 6 Lake and microcrystalline cellulose.
Prednisone Tablets, USP are prescription glucocorticoid tablets available in multiple strengths, including 1 mg, 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg, and 20 mg. According to the DailyMed label, prednisone is used for its anti-inflammatory and immune-suppressing effects in a wide range of listed endocrine, rheumatic, allergic, dermatologic, ophthalmic, respiratory, hematologic, gastrointestinal, and other conditions.
Product labeling also highlights important safety information, including infection risk, possible effects on blood pressure, potassium, blood sugar, bones, eyes, and growth in children. The label notes that prednisone should not be stopped abruptly and should be used at the lowest effective dose for the shortest necessary duration, as directed by a prescriber.
