Medication Summary

Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.

Overview

Prednisone tablets USP are an oral corticosteroid (glucocorticoid) available in 10 mg, 20 mg, and 50 mg strengths. The label says prednisone is used for many different conditions, including certain endocrine, rheumatic, allergic, skin, eye, respiratory, blood, neoplastic, gastrointestinal, and nervous system disorders.

The label lists important warnings. Prednisone can suppress the immune system and increase the risk of infection, including serious or fatal infections. It may also reactivate latent tuberculosis or hepatitis B, and it can worsen systemic fungal infections. Exposure to chickenpox, measles, and some vaccines may need special caution while taking corticosteroids.

The label also describes precautions such as gradual dose reduction, careful monitoring during long-term use, and caution in people with certain medical conditions. Reported adverse reactions include fluid retention, high blood pressure, muscle weakness, osteoporosis, stomach irritation or ulcer, skin changes, mood changes, cataracts, glaucoma, and changes in blood sugar.

Storage Information

protecting against undesirable pharmacologic effects. Store at 20° to 25 °C (68° to 77 °F); excursions permitted to 15° to 30 °C (59° to 86 °F) [see USP Controlled Room Temperature]. Dispense in a tight container, as defined in the USP/NF.

Key Counseling Points

  • Prednisone is a corticosteroid taken by mouth.
  • Use exactly as prescribed; the dose may be adjusted based on the condition being treated and the response.
  • Do not stop prednisone suddenly after long-term use; the label says it should be withdrawn gradually.
  • Tell a healthcare professional about any signs of infection, because prednisone can lower resistance to infections.
  • Avoid exposure to chickenpox or measles if you are taking immunosuppressant doses of corticosteroids, and seek medical advice if exposed.
  • Let a healthcare professional know about any history of tuberculosis or hepatitis B, because reactivation can occur.
  • The label says not to receive smallpox vaccination while on corticosteroid therapy, and other immunizations may also be a concern, especially at high doses.
  • Report unusual mood changes, severe depression, or psychotic symptoms to a healthcare professional.
  • Watch for swelling, weight-related fluid retention, stomach pain, or other effects listed in the label.
  • Follow the labelu2019s storage instructions and keep the medicine in a tight container.
