Medication Summary

Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.

Overview

PredniSONE Tablets USP are a glucocorticoid medicine for oral use. The label states that the tablets are available in 2.5 mg and 5 mg strengths, and that prednisone is a synthetic adrenocortical steroid with anti-inflammatory and immune-modifying effects.

The label lists many conditions where prednisone tablets may be used, including certain endocrine, rheumatic, allergic, skin, eye, lung, blood, gastrointestinal, nervous system, and other disorders. It is also used for some short-term or palliative situations, as described in the prescribing information.

Prednisone tablets should not be used in patients with systemic fungal infections or known hypersensitivity to components. The label warns that corticosteroids can suppress the immune system and increase the risk of infection, and that long-term use may cause serious eye, bone, metabolic, and endocrine effects.

Storage Information

protecting against undesirable pharmacologic effects. Store at 20° to 25 °C (68° to 77 °F); excursions permitted to 15° to 30 °C (59° to 86 °F) [see USP Controlled Room Temperature]. Dispense in a tight, child-resistant container as defined in the USP/NF.

Key Counseling Points

  • This medicine is a corticosteroid (glucocorticoid) taken by mouth.
  • Use exactly as prescribed; the label says dosing is variable and must be individualized.
  • Do not stop long-term corticosteroid treatment abruptly; the label says tapering is recommended.
  • Tell your clinician if you have signs of infection, since corticosteroids can increase infection risk and may mask infection signs.
  • Avoid exposure to chickenpox or measles if you are receiving immunosuppressant doses, and seek medical advice if exposed.
  • The label warns that corticosteroids can affect mood, sleep, and behavior.
  • The label warns about eye problems such as cataracts and glaucoma with prolonged use.
  • Use caution with vaccinations; the label says smallpox vaccination should not be given during corticosteroid therapy and other immunizations may be affected.
  • Take special care if you have a history of tuberculosis, hepatitis B, fungal infection, or Strongyloides exposure, as described in the label.
  • Report suspected adverse reactions to the manufacturer or FDA as listed in the label.
