Overview

Prednisone tablets, USP contain prednisone, a glucocorticoid corticosteroid taken by mouth. The label describes prednisone as a medicine used for its anti-inflammatory effects and for effects on the body’s immune response.

This product is labeled for a wide range of conditions, including certain endocrine, rheumatic, allergic, skin, eye, respiratory, blood, cancer-related, kidney, and gastrointestinal disorders, as well as some other conditions listed in the label. It is Rx only.

Prednisone should not be used in people with systemic fungal infections or in those with a known hypersensitivity to the product components. The label also warns that corticosteroids can suppress the immune system and increase the risk of infection.

Patients should not stop corticosteroids abruptly without medical supervision, especially after prolonged use, because withdrawal or adrenal insufficiency can occur.

  • Avoid exposure to chickenpox or measles while taking corticosteroids; get medical advice right away if exposed.
  • Use caution if you have a history of infections, including tuberculosis, hepatitis B, fungal infection, or amebiasis, because the label warns about reactivation or worsening of some infections.
  • The label says corticosteroids can cause mood changes, insomnia, and other psychiatric effects.
  • If taken for a prolonged period, the label notes that growth in children should be monitored and bone effects may occur.
  • The label warns about possible interactions with many medicines, including warfarin, diabetes medicines, diuretics, NSAIDs, and some antibiotics.
