Journal Article Summary

The article investigates the use of text message-based systems to collect patient-reported outcomes (PROs) regarding knee osteoarthritis (OA) symptoms among patients at federally qualified health centers (FQHCs). This topic is significant because knee OA is a prevalent chronic condition in the U.S. that severely affects individuals' quality of life and incurs high healthcare costs. Additionally, there are notable disparities in OA treatment among different racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups, making it crucial to explore effective ways to engage under-treated populations in managing their symptoms.

In this pilot study, researchers invited 223 FQHC patients diagnosed with knee OA to complete a PRO survey via text message. The response rate was 24.7%, with higher completion among English speakers (28%) compared to Spanish speakers (17%). The primary barrier to participation was difficulty reaching patients, often due to disconnected phone numbers. Feedback indicated strong support for ongoing symptom monitoring, with 92% of participants expressing willingness to regularly complete PROs. Responders found the survey easy to use, while nonresponders cited technical issues and trust concerns as reasons for not participating.

The study has some limitations, including a potential underestimation of patient willingness to engage due to many unreachable patients. The findings may not be generalizable to other primary care settings, as the study focused on a single FQHC. Patients should discuss with their healthcare providers the importance of monitoring OA symptoms and how using PROs can enhance their treatment plans. Understanding the value of these surveys may encourage more patients to participate in future assessments, ultimately improving their care.
