Key Counseling Points
- This medicine is an opioid antagonist used to reverse opioid effects.
- It may be given by intravenous, intramuscular, or subcutaneous injection.
- The most rapid onset of action is generally with intravenous administration.
- The patient should be kept under continued surveillance after a response because some opioids may last longer than naloxone.
- Repeated doses may be needed if opioid effects return.
- Naloxone is not effective against respiratory depression caused by non-opioid drugs.
- Abrupt reversal in opioid-dependent people may cause withdrawal symptoms such as nausea, sweating, restlessness, and increased blood pressure.
- If an incomplete response occurs, respirations should be mechanically assisted as clinically indicated.
- Inspect the solution before use; do not administer unless the solution is clear and the container is undamaged.
- Protect from light by retaining the vial in the carton until ready to use, and discard any unused portion.
