Journal Article Summary
The article investigates the effectiveness of Narrow Band Ultraviolet B (NBUVB) phototherapy as an additional treatment for chronic urticaria, a skin condition characterized by persistent hives that can significantly impact a person's quality of life. Chronic urticaria affects a notable portion of the population, often leading to distress and discomfort. While antihistamines are commonly used to manage symptoms, there is limited research on the role of NBUVB in treating this condition, making this study important for exploring alternative treatment options.
In this study, 80 patients with chronic urticaria were divided into two groups: one received NBUVB therapy along with loratadine (an antihistamine), while the other group received only loratadine. The patients were assessed using a urticaria activity score (UAS) at various intervals during and after treatment. The results showed that those receiving NBUVB-loratadine had significantly lower UAS scores after 8 and 16 treatment sessions compared to the loratadine-only group, indicating that the combination therapy was more effective in reducing symptoms.
Despite the promising findings, the study has limitations, including a small sample size and its regional focus, which may affect the generalizability of the results. Patients should be aware of potential side effects from NBUVB, such as mild skin irritation, and should discuss any concerns or treatment options with their healthcare provider. This conversation is crucial for determining the best approach to managing chronic urticaria and ensuring patient safety.
