Journal Article Summary
The article investigates the safety concerns associated with the simultaneous use of herbal medicines and conventional medications among Latvian citizens. As the popularity of herbal remedies continues to rise globally, understanding the potential interactions between these natural products and prescription or over-the-counter drugs is crucial for patient safety. Many individuals mistakenly believe that herbal products are inherently safe, which can lead to serious health risks when combined with other medications.
The study surveyed 504 participants in Latvia, collecting data through a structured questionnaire from December 2019 to November 2021. The findings revealed that a significant majority (77.8%) of respondents used herbal preparations, often based on pharmacist recommendations or personal initiative. While 38.3% of participants viewed herbal remedies as safe, a larger portion (57.3%) expressed concerns about the safety of combining herbal and conventional medications. Notably, serious interactions were identified with certain herbal products, such as grapefruit, St. John’s wort, and valerian, which could lead to adverse effects or reduced efficacy of prescribed drugs.
Limitations of the study include potential biases in self-reported data and the lack of access to participants' complete medication histories. Readers should be aware that while many herbal products are commonly used, they are not without risks, especially when taken alongside conventional medications. It is essential for patients to discuss their use of herbal remedies with healthcare professionals to ensure safe and effective treatment plans, particularly for those with chronic conditions or who are taking multiple medications.
