Journal Article Summary

The article investigates how access to technology, digital literacy, and preferences for enrollment support impact participation in biomedical research, particularly among populations served by Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs). This topic is significant because as research increasingly relies on digital tools for participant engagement, disparities in technology access and comfort may hinder equitable participation. Understanding these factors is essential to ensure that diverse populations are included in research, which can lead to more comprehensive and applicable health findings.

In this study, researchers analyzed enrollment data from 605 participants at a large FQHC in Connecticut, focusing on their internet access and comfort with technology. Participants could choose between High-Touch support, where staff assisted them, and Low-Touch support, where they completed the process independently. The findings revealed that while most participants had internet access, their comfort with technology was a stronger predictor of their support preference. Those who felt uncomfortable with technology were more likely to choose High-Touch support, highlighting the importance of addressing digital literacy in research enrollment strategies.

The study has some limitations, including potential selection bias due to incomplete data and the focus on a single site, which may affect the generalizability of the results. Additionally, the reliance on self-reported measures for technology comfort could introduce bias. Patients and caregivers should discuss their comfort level with technology and any concerns about digital enrollment processes with healthcare professionals. This dialogue can help tailor support to individual needs, ensuring equitable access to research opportunities and enhancing participation in health studies.
