Journal Article Summary

The article investigates the necessity of monitoring patients who are treated with low-dose oral minoxidil (LDOM) for hair loss. This topic is important because LDOM is increasingly used to manage various hair disorders, yet there is limited evidence regarding its safety and the need for routine monitoring, especially in patients with normal health profiles. Understanding whether regular check-ups are necessary can help streamline patient care and reduce unnecessary healthcare visits.

The study analyzed data from 74 patients treated with LDOM at a specialized hair clinic over a period from April 2017 to June 2020. Patients were monitored for clinical and laboratory parameters every six months, focusing on blood pressure, heart rate, weight, and liver and kidney function. The findings indicated that these parameters remained stable throughout the treatment, suggesting that routine monitoring may not be required for asymptomatic patients with normal baseline values. However, some patients experienced mild side effects, with hypertrichosis being the most common, and a small number of patients discontinued treatment due to adverse effects.

Despite the positive findings, the study has limitations, including its retrospective design and the relatively small sample size from a single center. It also did not account for various comorbidities or concurrent medications that might influence outcomes. Patients, especially those with preexisting renal issues, should discuss their treatment plan and monitoring needs with their healthcare provider to ensure safe use of LDOM and to address any potential side effects.
