Results showed a significant reduction in feeding tube-related medication errors (FTRMEs), from an incidence rate of 0.15 errors per medication administration before the intervention to 0.02 during the intervention phase. This indicates an 87.2% decrease in errors, highlighting the effectiveness of the CDSS in improving medication safety for patients with feeding tubes.
Despite the positive outcomes, the study has limitations, including its design and the fact that it was conducted at a single hospital, which may affect the generalizability of the findings. Additionally, some errors during the intervention phase were attributed to human oversight, suggesting that further improvements are needed in the implementation process. Patients and caregivers should discuss any concerns about medication administration through feeding tubes with healthcare professionals, ensuring that they understand the importance of using appropriate formulations and the potential risks associated with medication errors.
