Journal Article Summary

The article investigates the management and outcomes of paracetamol poisoning and overdose at Hamad Medical Corporation in Qatar, a significant public health issue due to the high incidence of such cases. Paracetamol is a commonly used pain reliever, but its misuse can lead to severe liver damage and even death. Understanding the patterns of paracetamol poisoning is crucial for improving treatment protocols and preventing future cases, especially since it is a leading cause of poisoning worldwide.

The study analyzed medical records of 69 patients who were admitted to the emergency department between December 2018 and September 2019 due to excessive paracetamol ingestion. Among these patients, 43 had paracetamol overdose, while 26 were classified as having paracetamol poisoning. Key findings revealed that those with poisoning ingested significantly higher amounts of paracetamol and had longer hospital stays compared to the overdose group. Additionally, a higher percentage of patients in the poisoning group received N-acetylcysteine (NAC), the standard treatment for paracetamol overdose, although some adverse effects were noted in those treated with NAC.

Limitations of the study include reliance on electronic medical records, which may lead to inaccuracies in data regarding dosage and timing of ingestion. The findings are specific to one hospital and may not represent the broader population in Qatar. Patients and caregivers should discuss any concerns about paracetamol use and potential overdose with healthcare professionals, especially considering the risks associated with unintentional or intentional misuse. Understanding the signs of overdose and the importance of timely treatment can significantly impact patient outcomes.
