Overview

Amlodipine besylate tablets are a calcium channel blocker taken by mouth. They are used alone or with other medicines to treat high blood pressure and certain types of chest pain related to coronary artery disease.

For hypertension, the medicine is used to lower blood pressure. Lowering blood pressure can reduce the risk of serious cardiovascular events, especially stroke and heart attack.

For angina, amlodipine may help treat chronic stable angina and vasospastic angina. In some patients with angiographically documented coronary artery disease and no heart failure or very low ejection fraction, it is used to reduce the risk of hospitalization for angina and the need for a coronary revascularization procedure.

• Take amlodipine by mouth once daily as directed.
• Adult starting dose is usually 5 mg once daily; maximum dose is 10 mg once daily.

• If hypotension, worsening angina, or symptoms of myocardial infarction occur after starting or increasing the dose, medical evaluation is needed.
• Use caution in severe hepatic impairment because dose titration should be slow.
