Medication Summary

Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.

Overview

Enalapril maleate tablets are a prescription medicine used to treat high blood pressure. They are also indicated for symptomatic congestive heart failure, usually with diuretics and digitalis, and for clinically stable asymptomatic left ventricular dysfunction to help lower the risk of developing overt heart failure and hospitalizations for heart failure.

Enalapril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. After it is taken by mouth, it is changed in the body to enalaprilat, the active form. The label says blood pressure lowering effects can begin within about 1 hour, with the strongest effect usually seen in 4 to 6 hours.

The tablets are supplied in different strengths for oral use. Inactive ingredients may include corn starch, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, pregelatinized starch, and sodium bicarbonate, with color additives varying by strength.

Storage Information

Storage Store at 20º to 25ºC (68º to 77ºF) [See USP Controlled Room Temperature]. Dispense in a tight container as per USP, if product package is subdivided.

Key Counseling Points

  • This medicine is taken by mouth and should be used exactly as prescribed.
  • It is used for high blood pressure, heart failure, or left ventricular dysfunction, depending on the prescription.
  • Blood pressure can drop, especially when starting treatment; report lightheadedness or fainting.
  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, throat, or trouble breathing can be a sign of angioedema and needs immediate attention.
  • Tell a healthcare professional right away if persistent cough develops.
  • Report signs of dehydration or heavy sweating, since these can increase the chance of low blood pressure.
  • Patients with kidney disease, diabetes, or those taking potassium supplements or potassium-sparing diuretics have a higher risk of high potassium.
  • This medicine should not be taken with sacubitril, and it should not be used within 36 hours of switching to or from sacubitril/valsartan.
  • If pregnancy occurs, the label says enalapril should be stopped as soon as possible.
  • Do not take more medicine until consulting the prescribing physician if symptoms such as angioedema or syncope occur.

Helpful Patient Education

Enalapril maleate tablets are an ACE inhibitor prescription medicine used to treat hypertension. The label also describes use in symptomatic congestive heart failure and in certain patients with asymptomatic left ventricular dysfunction. After oral administration, enalapril is converted to enalaprilat, the active ACE inhibitor.

This educational product information is based on DailyMed label content and includes key safety points such as angioedema, low blood pressure, kidney function changes, high potassium, cough, and pregnancy-related risks.
