Medication Summary

Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.

Overview

Hydrochlorothiazide tablets are a diuretic and antihypertensive medicine. The label says they are used as add-on treatment for edema linked to congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis, corticosteroid and estrogen therapy, and certain kidney disorders. They are also used to manage high blood pressure, either by themselves or with other blood pressure medicines.

The tablets are for oral use and come in 12.5 mg, 25 mg, and 50 mg strengths. The inactive ingredients include corn starch, dibasic calcium phosphate dihydrate, FD&C Yellow No. 6 Aluminum Lake, lactose monohydrate, and magnesium stearate.

The label warns that hydrochlorothiazide can affect fluid and electrolytes, including sodium, potassium, chloride, and magnesium. It may also be associated with dizziness, low blood pressure, increased uric acid, changes in blood sugar, and other side effects listed in the label.

The label also notes a risk of acute myopia and secondary angle-closure glaucoma, and it says hydrochlorothiazide is associated with an increased risk of non-melanoma skin cancer. Patients are instructed to protect skin from the sun and undergo regular skin cancer screening.

Storage Information

Dispense in a well-closed container as defined in the USP, with a child-resistant closure (as required). Store at 20° to 25°C (68° to 77°F) [see USP Controlled Room Temperature].
