Medication Summary

Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.

Overview

Lovastatin tablets USP are a cholesterol-lowering medicine used along with a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol. The label says it is used to lower total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol when diet and other non-drug measures have not been enough.

The tablets are also indicated to reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, unstable angina, and coronary revascularization procedures in certain people without symptoms of cardiovascular disease. In people with coronary heart disease, lovastatin is used to slow the progression of coronary atherosclerosis.

For adolescent boys and girls who are at least one year post-menarche and 10 to 17 years old with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, it is used as an add-on to diet to reduce total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and apolipoprotein B when specific LDL-C criteria are met.

The label describes lovastatin as an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor that helps reduce elevated LDL-C levels.

Storage Information

Storage Store at 25°C (77°F); excursions permitted to 15° to 30°C (59° to 86°F) [see USP Controlled Room Temperature].

Key Counseling Points

  • Lovastatin may be used to reduce the risk of certain coronary heart disease outcomes in selected patients.
  • Tell a healthcare professional about all other medicines, because the label warns that some drugs can raise lovastatin levels and increase the risk of myopathy.
  • Grapefruit juice can increase lovastatin exposure, according to the label.
  • The label says secondary causes of high cholesterol should be excluded and a lipid profile should be performed before starting therapy.
