Journal Article Summary
The article investigates the prevalence and factors associated with thyroid dysfunction in cancer patients undergoing treatment with targeted therapies, specifically tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) and immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). Understanding this topic is crucial because thyroid dysfunction can significantly impact the health and quality of life of cancer patients. As targeted therapies become more common in cancer treatment, identifying potential side effects like thyroid issues is essential for improving patient care and outcomes.
The study included 144 patients treated with TKIs and 18 patients treated with ICIs at Rajavithi Hospital in Thailand. Among the TKI patients, 14.6% exhibited thyroid dysfunction, primarily subclinical hypothyroidism. Factors such as male sex, chronic kidney disease, and hepatitis B virus infection were associated with an increased risk of thyroid dysfunction. In the ICI group, 50% experienced thyroid dysfunction, with most cases occurring within 46 days of treatment initiation, and 55.6% of these patients required levothyroxine replacement therapy.
However, the study has limitations, including a small sample size and the lack of baseline thyroid function tests before treatment, which may affect the interpretation of risk factors. Patients should be aware of the potential for thyroid dysfunction when undergoing these therapies and discuss any symptoms or concerns with their healthcare providers. Regular monitoring of thyroid function is recommended, especially for those on TKIs and ICIs, to ensure timely intervention if thyroid issues arise.
