Journal Article Summary

The article investigates the performance of dissolvable microarray patches (MAPs) that deliver antihistamine drugs, specifically loratadine (LOR) and chlorpheniramine maleate (CPM). The study addresses a significant gap in the field, as there are currently no standardized protocols for testing the effectiveness of these patches in a way that accurately reflects the conditions of human skin. Understanding how these patches perform is crucial for improving drug delivery methods, making treatments more effective, and enhancing patient comfort.

To conduct the research, the authors optimized in vitro release testing (IVRT) and in vitro permeation testing (IVPT) methods using different release media, including artificial interstitial fluid (AIF) and traditional phosphate-buffered saline (PBS). They examined how the composition of these media affects the release rates of LOR and CPM from the patches and their ability to penetrate the skin. The results showed that the type of release medium significantly influenced the drug release rates and skin penetration, with LOR showing a faster release in PBS:ethanol compared to AIF, while CPM's release was consistent across both media.

Despite the valuable insights gained, the study has limitations, including the use of porcine skin instead of human skin, which may affect the applicability of the results to human patients. Additionally, the complexity of drug interactions with skin layers and the effects of different media on skin integrity were not fully explored. Patients and caregivers should discuss these findings with healthcare professionals, especially if considering treatments involving MAPs, to understand the implications for drug delivery and the potential effects on skin health.
