The findings revealed that a vast majority of pharmacists (over 90%) did not ask any questions to screen for safe use before dispensing the medication, and only a small number provided any counseling about the drug's use or potential side effects. This lack of engagement raises concerns about the pharmacists' ability to prevent adverse outcomes associated with COC use.
The study has limitations, including its focus on only two regions, which may not represent practices in other areas. Additionally, the potential for the Hawthorne effect—where participants alter their behavior because they know they are being observed—could have influenced the results. Patients and caregivers should discuss these findings with healthcare professionals to ensure they receive proper counseling and screening when obtaining COCs, as this can significantly impact their health and safety.
