Emergency contraception works best when it is used quickly. That is why some people choose to keep a morning after pill on hand before they need it. Planning ahead can reduce stress and save important time after a condom break, missed birth control, or unprotected sex.

Why advance access matters

Levonorgestrel emergency contraception is time-sensitive. If you already have a product available, you do not have to wait for a store to open, find transportation, search for stock, or navigate an uncomfortable conversation during a stressful moment.

For more on timing, read How Soon Should You Take Emergency Contraception After Unprotected Sex?.

What to check before buying

Look for the active ingredient and strength on the Drug Facts label. Many levonorgestrel emergency contraception products contain levonorgestrel 1.5 mg. Check the expiration date before buying and again before using. Do not use a product if the packaging is damaged or the expiration date has passed.

How to store it

Store emergency contraception according to the package directions, usually at room temperature and away from excessive heat, moisture, or direct sunlight. Avoid keeping it in a hot car, a humid bathroom, or a bag where the package may be crushed.

Who may benefit from keeping it on hand?

People who use condoms as their main pregnancy prevention method, people who sometimes have gaps in birth control access, college students, frequent travelers, and anyone who wants a backup plan may consider keeping emergency contraception available. This does not mean you expect something to go wrong; it means you are prepared.

Know when another option may be better

Keeping levonorgestrel on hand is convenient, but it may not be the best option for every situation. If more than 72 hours have passed, if medication interactions are possible, if body weight is a concern, or if you want an IUD option, contact a health care professional promptly.
