Journal Article Summary

The article investigates the effects of two different vitamin D supplementation strategies—single high-dose versus daily low-dose oral colecalciferol—on vitamin D levels and muscle strength in postmenopausal women. Vitamin D deficiency is a widespread health issue that can lead to various complications, including weakened muscles and increased risk of falls and fractures. Understanding the most effective way to supplement vitamin D is crucial, especially for older women who are more susceptible to these health problems.

In this study, 60 healthy postmenopausal women with low vitamin D levels participated. They were randomly assigned to receive either a single dose of 300,000 IU of vitamin D3 or a daily dose of 800 IU for 12 weeks. The results showed that while both groups experienced increases in vitamin D levels, the single-dose group had significantly higher levels at both the 4th and 12th weeks. However, the daily low-dose group demonstrated significant improvements in muscle strength, particularly in the quadriceps and hamstring muscles, at different time points during the study.

The study has some limitations, including a small sample size and being conducted at a single center, which may affect the generalizability of the findings. Additionally, the participants had relatively low baseline vitamin D levels, which could complicate the interpretation of the results. Patients should consult with healthcare professionals about their vitamin D needs and the best supplementation strategy for their individual health circumstances, especially considering the potential risks associated with high-dose vitamin D supplementation.
